LETTERS: Your discussion from around the city in this week's Observer

Coventry Editorial 9th Sep, 2018 Updated: 9th Sep, 2018   0

There have been more incidents of rubbish being dumped outside the homes of residents, some of whom may be simply unable to move it themselves. This has happened in Westwood ward, but could be anywhere in the city.

The Council Waste Collection Service will take away anything properly placed in refuse bins and very large items can be delivered to the council disposal site in Whitley.

Our city deserves better than the behaviour of a few irresponsible people who inconvenience the law-abiding majority.

I hope that anyone witnessing such littering will report it at once. The council email is; [email protected] and the telephone number is; 08085 834333.

With so many sad things happening around the world, such as social unrest, flooding and much more, your readers will no doubt wish to check on their intended destinations before travelling overseas.

There is no total security anywhere, but the website www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice gives constantly updated information on every country in the world. I strongly recommend consulting it.

I have been fortunate enough to be part of the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre board for just over 12 months now.

The people that work here are amazing, they have helped welcome and meet the needs of refugees and migrants for many years. They support integration into our city and continually help them rebuild their lives while encouraging them to contribute to the life of the city.

The UK does not do enough to support this area but I am optimistic following the PM’s visit to Nigeria this week. The UK government will unveil a series of measures to fight human trafficking and support victims of modern slavery in Nigeria, so that we can help to protect thousands of vulnerable people.

I am truly honoured to sit on the CRMC board and wish more people would support this great cause. It shouldn’t be up to centers like CRMC to support these people so I am pleased to see determined efforts from the government by driving the charge in tackling the root causes of dangerous migration. The benefits will be far reaching – preventing regional instability and helping us tackle modern slavery here in the UK.

There are many ways you can help support CRMC locally. If you want to get involved please check out www.covrefugee.org, you will find 15 ways you can help and support their services and clients.
