THE LIFE of a Coventry soldier has been celebrated by the dedication of a memorial plaque and tree in the city’s War Memorial Park.

The service in commemoration of Gary Bingley MM was led by his widow, Jay Morgan Hyrons.

Gary was killed in action during the Falklands War on May 28, 1982. His picture adorns the cover of his widow Jay’s book.

Gary was killed in action during the Falklands War on May 28, 1982.

The service was attended by friends from childhood and veteran members of the Parachute Regiment with whom Gary was deployed.

Guests of honour were Lord Mayor Rachel Lancaster, Deputy Representative of the Falkland Islands Government UK Michael Betts, and Major Adam Jowett, the Regimental Secretary of The Parachute Regiment.

A Falkland Islander himself, Mr Betts gave a personal tribute to the 258 fallen, his parents having vividly recounted the conflict and the cost of securing the Island’s freedom.

In her address, the Lord Mayor said: ‘We celebrate the life of a young man who grew up here in Coventry – who attended our schools, played for our local football teams, and who, like so many of our finest, answered the call to serve his country with courage and conviction.

“We as a city know the pain of conflict and the power of healing.”

His widow Jay, a thrice published author, has written a book The Falklands Fallen which recounts the lives of all those who perished. Gary’s photo dons the front cover of the book.

A matching plaque will be soon installed in the Falkland Islands.
