TWO men have been arrested after a ‘late night drunken climbing spree’ up Coventry Cathedral.

Photos show the men being lowered back to the ground after their dangerous 40-foot climb up one of the walls in the cathedral ruins on Sunday night (August 12).

The two men were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespassing and they remain in custody.

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) and West Midlands Police (WMP) were on the scene.

The fire service used a hydraulic platform to rescue the men.

WMFS research, development, technology and innovation station manager Pete Drummond tweeted: “Not the brightest thing to be doing on a night out.

“Two adult men decided it was a good idea to scale Coventry Cathedral endangering themselves and others for a laugh.

“Many thanks to Coventry Fire, the WMAS and WMP in assisting.

“Both have been arrested for their actions. Fools.”

Coventry Police tweeted: “Huge thank you to our colleagues at WMFS and WMAS for their help returning two drunk people back to earth from the top of the cathedral ruins tonight after their late night drunken climbing spree #Team3 #MultiAgencyTeamWork #coventrycathedral #rescue.”

Operations manager at West Midlands Ambulance Service Stuart Hargreaves tweeted: “Working with Coventry Fire Service, Coventry Police and WMAS to safely bring down two males who managed to scale the heights of the Coventry Cathedral ruins before getting stuck.

“Safely returned uninjured into the arms of the police.”

A WMP spokesperson said: “Two men were arrested after climbing to the top of the cathedral ruins in Coventry City Centre at around 10.50pm last night (Sunday, August 12).

“The men, aged 25 and 36, were brought down from the building by West Midlands Fire Service and subsequently arrested for aggravated trespassing.

“They are still in police custody.”

A WMFS spokesperson said: “We were called at 10.46pm. A 999 call to the cathedral ruins in Bailey Lane, Coventry.

“We sent a crew from Coventry to the scene.

“Incident involves two male adults stuck on a 40 foot cathedral wall.

“We used the hydraulic platform to assist in rescuing the two men.”
