COVENTRY Lord Mayor Coun Kevin Maton visited popular postmaster Atul Ganatra who is set to retire after 41 years running Charter Post Office in Canley.

Atul became one of Britain’s youngest postmasters in 1981 after deciding he wanted to run his own business.

His branch remained open during the pandemic despite many others closing through the first lockdown as Atul wanted to continue to serve the community.

Atul said: “The best thing about being a Postmaster has been the people I have met and been able to help them.

“I really enjoy helping people, that makes me happy.

“A Postmaster is trusted and there are many customers that I’ve helped over the years with a form, a phone call or advice.”

He’s decided to retire as his lease was due to expire and he didn’t want to commit to working another ten years.

Atul said he is ‘delighted’ a new postmaster will be taking over and refurbishing the shop.

The branch will close at 3pm on Friday, September 16 before reopening on Wednesday, October 5 under new postmaster Niranjan Krishnalingam.

Atul said he is looking forward to retirewhere he intends to play golf, travel and conduct voluntary work.

He is also keen to be a relief Postmaster to provide holiday and sickness cover for other branches.
