A MAN has admitted to killing his brother and assaulting his ill mother at her Coventry home.

Steven Barnes pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility for the killing of his brother Paul Hawkesford-Barnes and attempted wounding of his mother.

The 64-year-old admitted the charges at Leamington Justice Centre today (September 30) and was remanded in custody ahead of being sentenced on November 18.

Paul Hawkesford-Barnes was found with head and upper body injuries at the address in Hopedale Close.

These were consistent with the 57-year-old being subjected to a sustained assault and a blood-stained, damaged guitar was found nearby.

His mother, in her 80s and suffering from dementia, was found with facial injuries.

She has since passed away although not as a result of her injuries.

They were discovered by Barnes’ mothers carer.

His mother also received support from family members including Barnes who stayed with her overnight due to her poor health but had struggled with caring for her.

Barnes was arrested on March 15 after he presented at a police station in Skegness the same day Paul’s body was discovered.
