A MAN has handed himself in to police following a fatal hit-and-run involving a car which had been allegedly stolen at knifepoint only minutes earlier.

The collision took place on Barras Lane in the Earlsdon area of Coventry in the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday, July 3).

The 26-year-old local man handed himself into a police station and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and robbery.

A pedestrian died after being hit by a Chevrolet Captiva which failed to stop at the scene and was abandoned after crashing on Radford Circle moments later.

The 38−year-old later died in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The Captiva had been stolen in a car-jacking at knifepoint in Gordon Street just before the collision.

Police say the owner of the Chevrolet was threatened, assaulted and received minor injuries when the car was stolen by two male suspects.

And the men were then seen fleeing the scene of the crash on foot, leaving a large knife in the footwell.

Inspector Steve Radford, from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our investigation remains on-going and we will be interviewing the man in custody today.

“We believe that two men ran from the vehicle, so we are still appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.”

Police can be contacted on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
