POLICE in Coventry are appealing for witnesses after a man was shot in the head close to a popular children’s playground.

The 21-year-old was a front seat passenger in a black Peugeot 206, travelling along Mercer Avenue in Barras Heath when he was shot at around 5.50pm on Friday, April 10.

The man was taken to hospital with a serious head injury, where he is said to be in a critical condition.

Mercer Avenue was closed on Friday evening while officers carried out forensic inquiries into what happened.

Detective Sergeant Michelle Kiedron said, while in the early stages of investigation, police believe the car was driving towards the Stoke area when the man received his injury.

She added: “At this time, this is not thought to be a random attack and we believe the victim may know who is responsible but – due to his condition – he is clearly not in a position to tell us.

“This shooting happened in broad daylight – someone must have witnessed it and can give us a description of whoever is behind it.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time to call us on 101, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
