HOMELESS dogs are hoping to find somewhere to put their paws up this Christmas.
After the success of the Observer and Dogs Trust’s 12 Dogs of Christmas appeal in recent years – we are again appealing to readers to find a place in their hearts and homes for a four-legged friend.
Despite the impact of the pandemic, the Honiley-based rehoming centre has found homes for more than 600 dogs this year – and they are hoping it won’t be long before these 12 find their special someone too.
Assistant manager James Ackner said: “It has been a year none of us could have imagined, but thanks to the dog-loving public who have opened their hearts and their homes to our gorgeous dogs, we have continued to find dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages their ideal families.
“We want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in whatever way this year, and we have our fingers crossed that it won’t be too long before we are waving a very fond farewell to these dogs who are more than ready to head off to their forever homes.”
Butch is a two-year-old crossbreed who likes to get to know people slowly, but once he knows you, you have a friend for life.
He is very bright, enjoys training and is a fast learner. Butch would like an adult only home with no other animals and will need owners who can be at home during the day.
Bubbles is a three-year-old terrier. He is a sweet but sensitive boy looking for a special home.
He would like a single person household, but he would like to live with another calm, confident dog.
Once he knows you, he is an affectionate boy who loves his toys and a big comfy bed to snooze on.
Dogs Trust say he will be a great addition to a home with an owner who is happy to let him adjust to his new life in his own time.
Four-year-old lurcher Tiger is a bundle of fun and energy with lots of enthusiasm for life.
He loves heading out on walks with other dogs and when it comes to owners he is very affectionate so will need to be the only dog in the home.
Dogs Trust say Tiger will make a great family pet and can live with children aged eight and over – if they are comfortable around bouncy dogs. He cannot live with other pets.
Golden retriever Molly has dysplasia which does stop her from going on long walks – but it does not stop her having fun.
The one-year-old loves being with other dogs and can live in a home where there is already a dog present.
She is a loving girl when she knows people but becomes anxious when handled, so will need owners who are willing to build a bond with her before she leaves the rehoming centre.
The team would like Molly to find a home without children and who live close to the centre so they can support her and her new owners.
Siren is a five-year-old husky who lives up to his name. Huskies are known to be vocal and Siren is no different.
The team say he is a huge personality who loves to play with other dogs and go for long walks.
He can live with children aged 14 and over but can’t live with small furry animals or cats.
He is not used to being left home alone so his new owners will need to give him time to settle in and build up leaving hours gradually. He will also need help with house training, but the team are confident it won’t take him long to be trained in this area.
Ten-year-old terrier Frankie has settled in to kennel life and loves other dogs but would be best in a home where he is the only pet and there are no children.
The team say he will take a bit of time to settle into home life but he is a lively boy who loves his walks and playing with his toys, so there’s lots of fun to be had. His new owners will need to meet him several times before he heads home.
Nigel is a two-year-old patterdale cross and Dogs Trust staff say he is a real livewire – like most patterdales.
He arrived in September and needs a home with owners who are happy to channel his energies, as he likes to keep his brain busy too.
He is a sweet boy who likes to have access to areas where he can walk without being bothered by other dogs and needs his owners to be at home with him a lot.
He is a clever boy and learns new things very quickly so he’d suit owners who would find it rewarding to do training activities with him. He also loves to play with his toys. The team say Nigel will make his new owners laugh every day.
Eleven-year-old harrier Copper does not let age hold him back. He loves to go out on walks and learn new things.
When he’s at home, he likes to live with adults only, enjoys an afternoon snooze and his home comforts.
Copper needs a home where his owners are around most of the day. He can go out on walks with calm, quiet dogs but would like to be the only pet in the home.
Rizzo is a six-year-old crossbreed and staff describe her as a ‘beautiful’ girl who will need time to settle into her new home as she can be anxious in new environments.
Since arriving at the rehoming centre a couple of months ago, she has made lots of two-legged friends and is doing well with her training, particularly when it comes to being around other dogs and the vet.
She will need to meet her new owners several times before heading home so she can get to know and trust them. She would like an adult only home with no other pets and needs a secure garden to play in.
Flossy is a ten-year-old Jack Russell who has lots of energy and loves her walks.
She does not like to be left on her own and is finding kennel life difficult. She will need to be the only pet in an adult only home and although she may take a while to build a bond with you, once she has done she’s very affectionate and happy to curl up on your lap for an afternoon snooze.
She needs to go for walks in quiet areas as she can be overwhelmed if there are lots of dogs around.
Border collie Smudge has had a tough time and is looking for patient owners who can help him get used to the joys of living in a home.
The nine-year-old previously lived outside so has had a lot to learn recently, but he has proved you definitely can teach an older dog new tricks as he has come on in leaps and bounds since arriving at the rehoming centre.
He loves playing with his toys and enjoying his favourite treat, sausage.
He would suit a quiet home with few comings and goings, and would prefer quieter areas to enjoy his walks in.
Rocket is a three-year-old lurcher who is always ready to take off an adventure. He loves walks, toys and food.
Rocket is a very friendly boy and loves to be around people so he is looking for a home where people are around most of the day. He likes to keep his brain busy so in his new home his owners will need to give him things to keep him occupied.
He would like an adult only home and will need access to quiet walking areas. He would suit a home with owners who are used to having a lurcher in their life.
