MP’S are set to debate the collapse of the Coventry City of Culture Trust in Parliament next week.
The adjournment debate, secured by Coventry North West MP Taiwo Owatemi, will take place next Wednesday (June 14).
MPs will debate support provided by the government to the Trust, which went into administration in February, in the House of Commons.
The debate follows the announcement from the national audit office that it would be investigating central government funding and oversight of the City of Culture Trust.
The national audit office will be investigating what happened to central government cash given to the Coventry City of Culture Trust and the city council.
The findings of the watchdogs’ inquiry will be published later this year.
Taiwo Owatemi said: “With many millions of pounds of public funding provided to the Trust, it is right that MPs will have the chance to discuss how this situation was allowed to come about and the lessons that must be learnt for the future.
“I hope this debate will help to draw further attention to the impact the collapse of the Trust has had on local people and organisations in Coventry, as well as the ongoing need for transparency regarding the Trust’s finances.
“The City of Culture brought huge investment and opportunities to Coventry, enhancing our growing cultural sector.
“It is a great shame such a positive landmark event for our city has been tainted by the mishandling of the Trust’s finances from within, and the failure to deliver the planned legacy programme.
“Those who oversaw these mistakes must be held to account and made to provide the answers that people in Coventry deserve.”
