MUSIC MATTERS by Pete Chambers: Bold as brass and Robbie Raps

Bold as brass

Those of you who quite rightly say there is just too little brass band music around will delight in the news that the world famous Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band are coming to the Albany Theatre in Coventry at 7:30pm on Saturday September 28.

The reigning Champion Band of Yorkshire, Brighouse & Rastrick, are appearing in the Albany to celebrate Dave Lea’s remarkable 30-year tenure at the helm of the Jaguar Land Rover Band, who will be guests at the concert. The event will be conducted by Nigel Seaman and Professor David King and MC’d by the legendary Richard Evans.

An exciting night is promised, with a rousing massed bands finale and no doubt the Floral Dance will make an appearance four decades after it made unprecedented chart success for B&R in 1977.

Childrens’ tickets are just £6 and generous family discounts are also on offer. Tickets are available from , from the Box Office (Albany Road, Coventry CV5 6JQ) and over the phone by calling 024 7699 8964.

Robbie Raps

It’s pretty encouraging to see the amount of rising urban artists coming from the city liked Jay1, Skatta and Whizzy and many more of course.

Robbie Raps is another artist that has been plying his trade for some time and has now released the self-titled EP, Robbie RAPS.

This is how Robbie sees it: “Since I started working with The Mindstorm Music back in January, I have come a long way in a much shorter time than I ever would of expected.

“They have taken me to Networking Events from Birmingham to London meeting industry professionals and artists getting a true insight of how the industry works.

“Having my music played on stations like BBC Introducing, Write-ups on big blog sites, I have also learnt how to upload my music to all music stores including Spotify, Apple Music etc through distributions services such as Ditto, CD Baby, Tunecore and many others.

“I have learnt the importance of PRS, how to register my music and how to make money from your music in the safe and correct way and I have been invited to premium music events run by very well known hosts such as Blatantly Blunt and many others.

“All-round since joining the team my music knowledge has increased dramatically and I am forever grateful for The Mindstorm Team for giving me this opportunity to take my music further than it could when I started last year.”

I caught Robbie at this year’s Godiva Festival, and if the excitement and build up to his amazing set was anything to go by, then this EP will fly and so will Robbie.

Some of the old school among our readers may roll their eyes just by hearing the word “rap”, but in this world of discontent they seem to be the only ones saying how it is with their often gritty, often in-your-face lyrics. Long may they reign.
