Sounding Off as Artist Of The Month

On Saturday, July 15, I welcome our next Artist of The Month to the Coventry Music Museum with a special Sounding Off event and the induction of Guy Surtees.

I have mentioned this amazing local musician a few times in the last few months, so fitting he should be given the accolade of Artist of the Month, at 12midday at the museum on Saturday, July 15.

We close the doors for one hour and it’s then I get to ask the questions and find out more about this great Cov artist who has been around from the 1980s.

Guy will also give us a few of his amazing English country songs and it will be a chance for the audience to ask a question or two. Just come along, normal museum entry prices apply.

Govinda with Bhangra Symphonica

Check out tonight (Thursday, July 13) at Drapers Hall Govinda with Bhangra Symphonica, a thrilling evening of music, from the Punjab to Peterborough via Coventry and the world!

East meets West, Bhangra meets Classical. Bhangra Rock band Kissmet and The Swan join forces to form Bhangra Symphonica.

Stone Foundation live at Just Dropped In

What’s better than a record shop full of people?

A record shop full of people watching an amazing live band.

Last week local soul legends Stone Foundation played an in-store promotion for their new album ‘Standing In The Light – 25 Years of Stone Foundation’ that included a live gig right there in one of Coventry’s special places – Just Dropped In at Fargo.

Sans their brass section tonight (apparently, they were off working with a certain Paul Weller), but brass or no brass, these guys still make an amazing sound, and Fargo was positively reverberating to their distinctive blue-eyed soul.

The new release ‘Standing In The Light’ is a career retrospective of 25 years of Stone Foundation.

Comprising 22 tracks (including two brand new recordings), this lavishly presented and lovingly crafted gatefold 2LP set shows off the band’s ever-changing sound and the impressive roster of collaborations, amongst some of their best-known tracks.

Including the divine ‘The Limit of A Man’, and the collaborations ‘Deeper Love’ with Paul Weller, ‘Now That You Want Me Back’ with Melba Moore, ‘The Night Teller’ with Graham Parker and ‘Strange People’ with William Bell and so many other great tracks.

As I write, the album is number six in the official Independent charts and number 10 in the official UK charts and the band have just featured front page on the legendary Blues and Soul Magazine!

They will be touring in autumn with local gigs at The Crossing in Birmingham on Saturday, November 11, and in Nuneaton on Saturday, December 9, at Queens Hall.
