COVENTRY Music Museum Curator Pete Chambers BEM writes for the Observer.

Delia naming

Coventry University is to name its flagship new Faculty of Arts and Humanities building after legendary music icon Delia Derbyshire.

Delia was an innovative musician and composer of electronic music born in Coventry in 1937 and best-known for her ground-breaking work with the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop and her realisation of the famous Doctor Who theme music.

She was awarded a posthumous honorary doctorate by Coventry University in 2017 (on the same proud day I got mine).

I’m happy to have spearheaded a campaign which saw a Coventry road named after this music icon too.

Dr Margaret Casely-Hayford CBE, Chancellor of Coventry University said: “This building is going to be an absolute focal point for our Faculty of Arts and Humanities’ future.

“We’re hugely excited about how the Delia Derbyshire building is going to take our facilities to a whole new level, and it’s really fitting we can mark it by honouring the legacy of such an iconic influencer on the city and the arts industry as a whole.

“She was a woman who heralded so much, by her use of technological advancements in her artistic innovation.”

New Caitlin McCarthy single – ‘Remember Tonight’

Star in the making Caitlin McCarthy is back with the release of a new single ‘Remember Tonight’ with ‘You and I’ as the B-side.

Caitlin’s powerfully distinctive vocals are on show once again.

‘Remember Tonight’ has a feelgood vibe with a great ‘La-La’ chorus which will stick in your head for a while.

While my fave track of the two is ‘You and I’, we all know how powerful those vocals are.

But we have to wait towards the end of the song before we get to the “Caitlin crescendo’.

Having said that, this cracker of a track drives along perfectly.

Caitlin and her band are all top-notch players and these two tracks are proof of that.

It’s out on October 7 from the usual platforms – check them out on pre-order.

Stone Foundation gig at HMV Empire

Next Saturday, October 8, be upstanding for modern soul band extraordinaire Stone Foundation, who will be bringing their unique sound to Coventry’s HMV Empire, with support from another superb band The Session.

The seeds of British modern soul band Stone Foundation were sown in the early 1990s when Neil Sheasby and Neil Jones met.

Over the years, they’ve collaborated with Paul Weller, Nolan Porter, Graham Parker, Carleen Anderson, Mick Talbot, Kathryn Williams, Laville, Melba Moore, Hamish Stuart, Dr Robert from the Blow Monkeys and more.

Tickets are £20, doors at 7pm. The show is suitable for those 18 and over.
