MUSIC MATTERS: Roddy ‘Radiation’ Byers is fresh back from his Californian tour

Coventry Editorial 23rd Nov, 2024   0

COVENTRY Music Museum curator Pete Chambers BEM writes for the Observer.

Former Specials guitarist Roddy ‘Radiation’ Byers is fresh back from his Californian tour and is already planning new gigs much nearer home, including a Coventry outing at our very own Arches venue on Saturday, December 14.

I’m hoping that after all these years I really don’t have to tell you, my wonderful readers, just how good Roddy and The Skabilly Rebels are playing live. If you have never witnessed Roddy on stage then I can only suggest you make sure you get down to this one.

Doors open at 8pm,

Admission is £10 in advance and £14 on the door. Expect class support in the shape of Voodoo Kings.

Peeping Tom Fanzine

Lookout for issue No 7 of the wildly idiosyncratic fanzine Peeping Tom, now out on the streets of Coventry.

Regular readers of this column will be aware of this publication and what a publication it is.

It’s very much the outpourings from a few very creative minds, with poetry, art, photography and loads of weird stuff that strangely is accessible but not accessible all at the same time.

There is no point of me trying to explain. You have to read it yourself to get the measure of this super entertaining booklet and, as there’s loads of Dylan and Cov references, it’s right up my existentialist street.

Indeed, it’s the perfect pick to read whilst waiting for Godot (next issue: metaphysical balloon modelling with Nietzsche-lol). I love it.

Twilight

I was recently talking to a museum visitor from Coventry who was obviously of the Goth persuasion, but had no idea that Coventry had a shop dedicated to all things Goth and Vampiric!

That got me thinking. If they hadn’t realised, then maybe others were the same.

So here’s my little shout-out to one of Coventry’s most wonderful shops, a real place of magic and wonderment.

Run by the very lovely Mandy and Paul, the shop is full of crystals and rings (some even in the shape of spiders), Yule cards, aromatherapy oils, incense burners, T-shirts and apparel, magic spell candles and so much more.

It really is a fascinating place and you don’t have to be of any persuasion to enjoy this Aladdin’s cave of delights.

It’s always black Friday here. It’s a must visit especially coming up to Yuletide there could be something a bit different here whilst looking for seasonal presents.

The shop is located at 1A and 1B Clay Lane, just off Walsgrave Road. Let’s support local business.
