COVENTRY Music Museum curator Pete Chambers BEM writes for the Observer.

The Original Rude Boy is Back

There really can’t be many music fans who read this column, who haven’t witnessed the power and the sheer energy of the Neville Staple Band live on stage.

It’s always something of an event when they play, especially when it’s back in the home city of Coventry.

So if you want a pre-Xmas Skank with the boys and girls from the office or the shop floor then get your tickets ASAP for what promises to be one of the best shows in town.

Because on Saturday, December 2, Catch 22 Promotions present The Neville Staple Band with support from AC30s and Lobster at the magnificent Square One Coventry University, doors at 7PM. Tickets available from See Tickets.

Neville said: “We have lost a lot of my music buddies in recent times, so I will continue to perform in honour of them all.

“I love to see the massive reactions to the hit songs like Ghost Town, Too Much Too Young and Gangsters, and fans continue to write to me about my rugged, energetic and fun stage presence from back in the day.

“The way we bring ska to the mainstream is by mixing Jamaican music with the English punky style.

“I love performing live and always include my Specials hits, along with other classics and career favourites.

“Every show is like a massive party, where fans of all ages love to dance, stomp or sing-along.”

Rosie’s Retro Festival Bazaar

Save the date – Saturday, November 25, for Rosie’s Retro Festival Bazaar coming to Drapers Hall from 10.30am to 4pm.

There you will find the event features 30 stallholders including: Kitchenalia, homeware and collectibles, Decorative ceramics and pottery, TV and film memorabilia, books and vinyl, crafts inspired by vintage patterns and trends, clothing and fashion accessories – including jewellery – for both men and women and mid-century furniture.

On top of all that there is to be a very special book signing from Ruth Cherrington and her Dirty Stop Outs Guide to 1970s Coventry.

I’m honoured to have contributed to this amazing publication when it was first released, but this is the updated edition packed with new interviews, amazing new photos and much more is the perfect Christmas gift.

Ruth will be there from midday to do a talk and sign books. Come and hear Ruth talking about the decade that gave 2-Tone to the world.
