MUSIC MATTERS- Winter break sees The Session ready to return with new gigs and songs

COVENTRY Music Museum curator Pete Chambers BEM writes for the Observer.

The Session on Tour

Coventry band The Session are about to embark on their 22nd year in the studio and on stage with six original albums and over 570 shows to their name.

It promises to be another great year for the band and one rhythm guitarist Dean MacDonald predicts will be ‘a time of rebirth’.

“We, The Session have been cooped away, in the depths of this winter.

“Scurrying away songs like little squirrels over these dark short nights but now we are back to face a new springtime season and embrace the stage and studio as we turn that corner to a host of possibilities in 2024.

“It’s always good to give an audience a rest from your activities and, in turn, have a rest from the scene.

“Apart from our music, then maybe this is why we are still here and relevant on the Cov music scene, in our 22nd year, still gathering great audiences, due to the fact that we post sparingly and only when we have news to bring.

“This keeps it from being fruitless and futile to the people who follow us.

“Now we are back and ready for 2024 and we hope you lot are ready to catch up with brand new gigs and music also.

Join The Session at one of the many festivals or gigs and they we will soon be sharing brand new music dates.

The latest dates for The Session are – March of the Mods – March 23, Kenfest 2024 – May 24, Raw TV – May 17, Motofest 2024 – June 1, Dagfest – July 13, Sent to Cov Fest – July 20 and Cov Uni – November 1.

Peeping Tom- Issue number 5

Like everything they do, the collective known as Ancient Cracked Actor have come up with a fanzine/magazine and are on to issue five.

I was given my orders to review it so here it is.

Musically, the collective create something with thinking outside of the box and here on the pages this also rings true.

This publication even comes with instructions,

A tip for reading Peeping Tom 5: ‘Begin at the beginning’ the King said, very gravely, and go on till the end: then stop’.

So that’s what I did – on the way we see references to Walt Jabsco (the 2-Tone man), some great sound bites and poetic moments.

There are some Dylan quotes, some political satire and each page a statement of some kind. Interestingly, one page alludes to those stolen acorns planted by John and Yoko in the Cathedral grounds in 1968, recently discovered and sent to the Beatles Museum in Liverpool (they should be in the Coventry Music Museum).

These peeps are psychic or what!

All in all I’m loving this – it’s art as art should be, often bright, often confusing and often accessible, I’m looking forward to issue 6.
