Music Museum display celebrates Coventry's groundbreaking contribution to the rave scene

A NEW wall has been unveiled at Coventry Music Museum to mark the city’s groundbreaking history with the rave scene in the 1980s and 1990s.

The rave wall is dedicated to Coventry becoming the first city in the country to host legal raves.

This was achieved as the city saw a loophole in the ‘rave laws’ and made the iconic club ‘The Eclipse’ a member-only establishment.

This move saw DJs from around the world travelling to Coventry to play at the Eclipse and experience the rave first-hand.

The permanent display was the brainchild of Coventry Music Museum volunteer Nik McKiernan.

Museum curator Pete Chambers BEM said: “We did dedicate a small corner in the museum to this very important piece of Cov music history, but it became clear that like 2-Tone music, it had an important story to be told.

“So at last we have a permanent display, lasers and all, that tells of those heady days in the late 80s and early 90s, it’s dedicated to all who attended and all the DJs that worked their magic there.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to have a place in the museum to share this important and revolutionary part of Coventry’s music history.”
