New animal charity shop a big help to Coventry

Coventry Editorial 13th Mar, 2023   0

A NEW RSPCA charity shop has opened in Coundon to raise vital cash to help animals in the city.

The new shop will be selling clothes, books, houseware, crockery, and electrical items, while Coventrians will also be able to donate to the RSPCA Coventry and District branch in-store.

The RSPCA Coventry and District Branch needs to raise £40,000 a month to run its rehoming centre, with the charity’s main source of income coming from its shops in Allesley, Wyken and Earlsdon.

Between them, the shops generate £100,000 per year – enough to keep the rehoming centre open for two-and-a-half months.

All the shops only have one paid staff member each so rely on volunteers.

The new Norman Place Road building has been undergoing extensive work to reopen with UK Flooring Direct volunteers giving a helping hand by taking on chores including painting around the shop.

RSPCA volunteer co-ordinator Charlotte Hawthorne said: “The shops are massively important to us, and hopefully now we’ve got another one, we will be able to put more money into rehoming the animals, vet treatments and other items.”
