New Coombe Abbey play area looks back at era of former resident Princess Elizabeth

COVENTRY’S brand-new Coombe Abbey play area is aiming to evoke memories of a royally remarkable period in the venue’s 900-year history.

Hermit’s Hollow, which opens later this month, is based on a period when Coombe Abbey was the home of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James I in the early 1600s.

The princess was gifted an ‘island’ within the grounds during her time there, where she ordered a cottage to be created for a widow and her children.

The new play area will feature bridges, walkways, ramps and tunnels as well as Hermit’s talking tube, where people of all ages can send secret messages to friends and family.

Youngsters can also climb amongst the tree tops on the upper level of the Canopy Spire or go whizzing down the spiralling tube slide or the accessible-to-all companion slide.

Parents can get refreshments from the Hermit’s cafe.
