A NEW ward has opened in Coventry at a service that supports young girls struggling with their mental health.
Faun Ward at Joyce Parker Hospital is an eight-bed extension to the existing state-of-the-art Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
The new Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit is for girls aged between 12 and 18 who have severe mental illnesses.
The ward is run by Cygnet Health Care, one of the largest independent mental health service providers in Britain.
Hospital Director, Sunita Heeley said: “The focus on Faun Ward is on stabilisation with a view on enabling the transition to a general acute ward or back into the care of community services.
“The new beds are already occupied, supporting young girls with their mental health.
“The service can provide robust care and support for young people displaying significant levels of challenging behaviour.
“It is our priority to ensure those young people suffering from their mental health get the very best support they need.
“I am so pleased the ward is now open and we can make a positive difference to more young girls.”
The ward has a full multi-disciplinary team input including a specialist doctor, psychologist, social worker, clinical psychologist, speech and language therapist and educational support from full-time teachers.
Dr Tony Romero, CEO of Cygnet Health Care, added: “We know that the pandemic has had a huge impact on people’s mental health and it is anticipated that an extra 500,000 people across the UK will experience mental health difficulties because of Covid-19.
“The new ward will ensure more young patients can receive the treatment and care they need close to family and friends which is so important in aiding their recovery.”
