New traffic restrictions aim to make Coventry more pedestrian-friendly

Coventry Editorial 14th Mar, 2023   0

NEW traffic restrictions are set to be introduced on the Trinity Street loop and High Street.

The decision has been made by the city council, with the changes set to be introduced on April 24.

The council said the changes will result in having more pedestrian-friendly spaces with fewer vehicles.

Bus gates will be used to control traffic, creating accessible areas for buses, cycles, taxis or private hire vehicles.

There will be a bus gate covering Burges, Trinity Street, Hales Street and Palmer Lane, while another gate will be introduced at the junction of Little Park Street and Salt Lane.

This will aim to reduce traffic at High Street and Little Park Street from the Salt Lane junction as well as Greyfriars Lane between Salt Lane and High Street.

A short section of road between Much Park Street and Bayley Lane will also become two-way, allowing access to Bayley Street and St Mary’s Street.

Between midnight and 10am each day, road users will be able to access the area as they do now, without restrictions, but some will have to apply for a permit to access the areas outside of these hours,

Parking arrangements within the area will also stay the same.

The council’s cabinet member for services, Coun Patricia Hetherton said: “We know that there is a lot of unnecessary traffic in and around the city centre which can make it tricky for pedestrians, especially those with mobility issues, to navigate and enjoy.

“We expect these changes to improve air quality in the city centre and make it a safer and more enjoyable place for local people and visitors.”

The changes will be made under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, which means the changes can be in place for up to 18 months.

During this time, the council will monitor traffic and pedestrian flows and listen to local views before deciding if the changes should become permanent.

A drop-in session will be held soon for Coventrians living in affected areas to ask questions.
