New years resolution made easy at Coventry sports centre thanks to new 'hydro bikes'

GETTING fit for the new year will be easier at one Coventry sports centre thanks to the introduction of a unique new fitness class.

Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre has launched ‘hydro bike’ sessions for fitness fanatics wanting to feel the extra burn and shift those Christmas pounds.

The bikes are similar to those used in spinning, but the equipment is submerged in the shallow section of the pool – bringing additional resistance to make it an even more substantial work out.

Hydrospin combines the best elements of indoor cycling and aquafit to provide a work out that incorporates the key elements of cardio, strength and endurance.

A total of 16 bikes have been purchased for the Fairfax Street-based centre – one for the instructor and 15 for customers to use.

Richard Parker, manager of Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre, said that while hydro bike classes were still relatively rare in the UK he hoped their introduction would provide city fitness buffs with an exciting new class.

He explained: “Fully qualified Instructors will lead the classes, which are similar to regular spinning sessions with differing music beats and themes, but it’s all done in water.

“Not only that, the bikes are extremely stable and there is no risk of them falling over in the pool.

“Non-swimmers or those who are not water confident do not have to worry as the classes will run in the shallow splash pool with lifeguards in attendance for additional support, so they are more than welcome to take part and enjoy”

The bikes are designed to work on the core body strength of individuals and the cardiovascular system.

A variety of classes are being planned to go ahead throughout the day, evening and to cater for everyone.

Richard added: “There will be a range of low impact sessions and then more high intensity ones so that there is something for everyone.

“Bikes will be removed from the pool after each session, so it will not impact on any of the swimming sessions.”
