OSCAR-nominated filmmaker Gareth Edwards will be one of 12 people to be honoured in his home town of Nuneaton next week.

Gareth, who lived in Nuneaton and attended North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, will be made a Freeman of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough.

He directed the 2016 Star Wars prequel ‘Rogue One’ and his latest film ‘The Creator’ has just been nominated for an Oscar for best visual effects.

His picture will look to beat action and superhero flicks such as Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One to scoop the gong on March 10.

Gareth is one of eight people to be awarded Freedom of the Borough, while four borough councillors- Bob Hicks, Geoff Ashford, Sonja Wilson and Sheila Hancox, will become honourary aldermen and alderwomen.

Being awarded an Honorary Freeman or Freewoman is the highest award a council can give and is given to anyone who has brought renown and great kudos to the Borough.

Coun Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “Through these awards we aim to continue to restore civic pride in the Borough.

“It is an honour to provide these distinctive individuals this reward for their efforts for their dedication and unwavering service to Nuneaton and Bedworth.”
