NUNEATON Oscar nominee and Star Wars director Gareth Edwards was one of 12 people honoured by his home borough on Monday, writes Holly Clement.
Edwards, who is from Nuneaton, was given the freedom of the borough at a Civic Award ceremony on Monday.
Known for 2016’s Rogue One, part of the Star Wars franchise, Edwards’ latest movie ‘The Creator’ has been nominated for numerous awards, including an Oscar for best visual effects.
Four former councillors were nominated to be Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen, while Edwards was one of eight people awarded Freedom of the Borough.
The Honorary Freeman or Freewoman is the highest award a council can give to someone of the Borough.
It is given to someone who has given exceptional service to the Borough over a long period of time or someone who has brought renown and great notability to the area.
Edwards who lived in Nuneaton was made Freeman of the Borough as a result of his successful career in media.
Former Commonwealth Champion, Paul Gough was also presented with the Freeman award for his services to Bedworth and Nuneaton as the Town Crier.
Successfully representing the Borough in British and National competitions.
The former councillors who received an award of Honorary Alderman and Alderwoman are Bob Hicks, Geoff Ashford, Sonja Wilson and Sheila Hancox.
This award is given to individuals who have, in the opinion of the councillors, up-help Council ideals and made a significant contribution to the welfare of the Borough community.
Coun Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “Through these awards we aim to continue to restore civic pride in the Borough.
“It is an honour to provide these distinctive individuals this reward for their efforts for their dedication and unwavering service to Nuneaton and Bedworth.”
