On their bike for safe travel

SCHOOLCHILDREN from across the West Midlands have been shown the ropes on how to keep safe and save the planet on their bikes.

Bikeability Trust has sent instructors out to give 64,062 school pupils between April 2021 and March 2022 to show them how to cycle confidently on today’s roads.

The cycling initiative says the number of children taking part has tripled since 2020/1021 and this is thanks to an increased demand for Bikeability in schools as children and their families are looking more cheaper, healthier, and more sustainable ways to travel.

The Trust said children who cycle enjoy better physical health and mental wellbeing swapping the car for cycling on the school run saves a family around £160 a year in fuel costs and almost half a tonne of carbon emission, that’s equal to growing almost eight trees for ten years.

Rebecca Deeley, from Coventry, said: “My daughter was so nervous to do her Bikeability having not long mastered cycling her bike, but she finished the week beaming with confidence and pride having achieved so much.

“She told me how wonderful the instructors were with her and gave her the confidence to step completely out of her comfort zone safely.”

By 2025, Bikeability aims to give every child in England the opportunity to learn to cycle.

Anybody can take part in Bikeability, you can find a course near you on the Bikeability website.
