AN OPEN day will be held at the Gilbert Richards Centre on Tuesday, April 25 to celebrate 40 years of the venue providing a social outlet for the city’s elderly.
The event will take place between 11am and 2pm and will showcase the activities the Earlsdon venue has been offering since 1983.
The city council provides day care at the centre while Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire support the volunteers running the craft and computer centre to provide classes and courses for older people.
Activities at the centre include quilting, crafts, dressmaking, pottery, upholstery, woodwork and IT support.
The building was originally opened as Broadway School in April 1928 but it closed after 50 years.
On April 28, 1983, the Gilbert Richards centre was opened in honour of the well-respected Earlsdon councillor.
The city council later offered the facility to Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire to allow them to provide over- 50s with social activities to help enhance their life.
The centre and its activities are run by a team of volunteers.
The charity’s community development officer Mick Spicer said: “The event is all about showcasing the work that we do at the Gilbert Richards Centre.
“The fantastic volunteers have built such a good community within the centre, helping to combat loneliness and isolation –they really do demonstrate how older people look out for one another in Coventry.”
