Orchestra swanning around at home

A BASSOONIST painting, violinists cleaning, horn players washing their instruments in the dishwasher and more.

It has all been in a day’s music making for members of Stratford-based Orchestra of the Swan during lockdown.

They have recorded the world premiere performance of ‘Swanning Around’ by David Bruce while alone at home.

Born in Connecticut in 1970, David grew up in England and now enjoys a growing reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. His work is performed by musicians from around the world with commissions by Carnegie Hall and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra among others.

His new work ‘Swanning Around’ is a lively and energetic piece dedicated to musicians everywhere and designed to brighten lockdown days.

David said: “These are challenging times for musicians across the UK and the world, and I thought we needed a reminder of the joy music can bring to our lives. I also thought the standard ‘lockdown performance’ video with a hundred faces on Zoom had been done to death, so I wondered if we could persuade the players to each mime their part while performing a typical lockdown activity. The results and enthusiasm for this task from the orchestra surpassed my expectations.”
