MORE than 23,000 Coventry residents have applied to the government for EU settled status amid Brexit, the Home Office has said.
EU nationals have up to June 30 2021 to apply for the scheme if they want to secure UK residency rights.
According to the ministry’s figures, which were collected up to December, Birmingham had the highest level of applicants at 57,340.
Coventry had the second highest number of applications, at just over 23,400 applications.
Most of the applicants are originally from Romania, with Polish and Italian the next largest groups.
Government security minister Brandon Lewis said: “I’m delighted that there have been more than 215,000 applications to the EU Settlement Scheme from people living in the West Midlands.
“EU citizens are an integral part of our society, culture and community and the scheme guarantees their rights in UK law.
I encourage all EU citizens in the West Midlands yet to apply to do so.”
