FUND-RAISERS across Coventry and Warwickshire put their best foot forward at the Coventry Memory Walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Nearly 1,000 walkers turned out to the city’s War Memorial Park to help people with dementia and their carers.

The event has raised £45,000 so far with more funds still to come in.

Among them was 64-year-old Andy Norris who took on the challenge with his family.

Andy cares for his wife Kim who was diagnosed with Posterior Cortical Atrophy, a rare form of dementia, last year at 63.

He said: “Memory Walk Coventry was something we could do as a family.

“I’d done several sponsored walks in the past, but neither of us had heard of a Memory Walk before.

“We were keen to sign up for anything that helped raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

“All the walkers soon bonded together for this common cause, and you could see by the smiles on everybody’s faces, that it meant a lot to take part.

“The added bonus was the choir half-way round, who kept everyone buzzing for the whole event.”

Memory Walks have been taking place over the past 10 years with 500,000 walkers raising £41million for Alzheimer’s Society.

Over 3,900 people in Coventry currently live with dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Society West Midlands Area Manager Janice Le Tellier added: “We are in awe of our incredible fund-raisers, including Andy and Kim and their family, who went above and beyond to raise vital funds and awareness for local people living with dementia.

“It was extremely moving to see so many people come together to honour or remember their loved ones.

“Every step taken will help us provide a lifeline of support for as many people affected by dementia as possible.”
