Parents should find out if Coventry University nursery will close 'by next Friday'

Coventry Editorial 14th Jun, 2023   0

COVENTRY University is hoping to inform staff and parents whether its nursery will close by next Friday (June 23).

The consultation period on the future of the university’s nursery ended on Tuesday (June 13).

A Coventry University spokesperson said senior leaders had met with affected parents, the city council and MPs to discuss the future of the nursery.

The spokesperson added those affected would be informed of the outcome of the consultation process as soon as possible.

But they said the university must ensure they give full and proper consideration to all the feedback and any alternative proposals before making any final decisions.

The university had previously said it had fully evaluated the options and it had become clear to them the service has not been financially viable for some time, with increasing costs meaning losses were set to continue and worsen.

On Monday, a petition calling for the nursery to be saved from closure was presented to Parliament by Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana.

Campaigners said the university first announced its plans to close the nursery in a letter to staff in May.

The change.org petition set up by parents has since gained more than 1,500 signatures.

Ms Sultana said: “Coventry University Nursery provides a vital service for our community and with dozens of families on its waiting list this service is clearly desperately needed.

“That’s why I’m campaigning with parents, staff and stakeholders to save the nursery.

“I hope Coventry University will heed our calls and secure the nursery’s future.”

Student and parent, Stephanie Beek added: “The nursery is absolutely vital for me to be able to continue with my degree.

“My son has improved so much socially, made lots of friends and he has made jumps in his speech and learning.

“The staff are always going above and beyond for my son and in trying to accommodate around my placement and uni.”
