Passengers called on to have their say over Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games transport plans

Coventry Editorial 17th Sep, 2019   0

TRANSPORT bosses are calling on passengers to have their say on plans for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The plans, which have been approved by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), are set to go on show at public exhibitions across the region.

The draft plan outlines how extra passengers and vehicles will be built into the network and how public transport will keep the region moving, making sure residents, businesses and visitors can continue to travel around the West Midlands.

The NEC in Marston Green is set to host the Badminton, Boxing, Netball, Table Tennis and Weightlifting events and the Coventry Arena and stadium (The Ricoh Arena) will be hosting the Judo, Rugby 7s and Wrestling events.

The Lawn Bowls will be held at Victoria Park in Leamington.

Over the next 12 weeks comments from residents and businesses across the West Midlands are being welcomed as part of a feedback process.

There will be a marquee in Mell Square in Solihull on October 5 from 10am until 3pm and an exhibition bus in Broadgate in Coventry on November 2 from 9am until 5pm.

West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street, said: “It is imperative that people across the West Midlands are aware of what is going on and what proposed changes are taking place, so I would encourage anyone who lives, works or travels in the region to read this plan and sign up to make sure they are kept up to date.

“We welcome all feedback, and with your help we can make the Commonwealth Games the best it can be.”

Transport for West Midlands, the transport arm of the WMCA, is asking if people agree with the five principles the plan is built around…

* Firstly, public transport will be the easiest and most effective way to get around during the games.

* Transport will be safe, secure and reliable so athletes, game officials and the media can get to where they need to be on time.

* Thirdly, the impact of the Games on the transport network will be minimised to ensure residents can get to work on time, businesses can make and receive deliveries and the region remains open for business.

* The games will be a catalyst for delivering transport projects and will be maximised to make sure the effects are long lasting.

* Finally, public transport will be easy to use, affordable and accessible across so that everyone is able to take part and enjoy the games.

The consultation runs until December 6.
