People of Coventry urged to join in with 75th VE Day commemoration despite Coronavirus cancellations

Coventry Editorial 5th May, 2020   0

COVENTRY will be one of the many places up and down the country to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday.

The milestone is being held to honour and remember those who gave so much to end war in Europe and, despite the official celebrations for the city having to be cancelled because of Coronavirus, residents are still being asked to celebrate the historic event’s anniversary.

People can download the ‘Great British Bunting’ pack from the BBC, which can be coloured in and put up in windows.

Participants can decorate it with images of whatever inspires them – from wartime heroes, to the Home Front and pictures of peace.

The Government has developed a new website which has lots of ways people can join in the celebration.

The city’s Business Improvement District (BID) team is linking up with city centre businesses to provide afternoon teas that can be delivered to people’s front doors so they can join in on the day safely from their own homes and gardens.

Coun Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of the City Council and Cabinet Member for Events, said the anniversary was a very important date.

“Clearly here in Coventry, a city synonomous with this dreadful period in Britain’s history and how we rose to rebuild ourselves, it is fitting that we mark the occasion.

“Sadly, with the ongoing pandemic and Government guidelines on staying home and saving lives, the great events we had planned along with BID had to be cancelled.

“However, fitting with our reputation as a city that always rises to the challenge, I’m sure the community will want to mark this important date and show their support by commemorating the anniversary.

“By taking part either through supporting the local businesses who are delivering food to people’s doors, decorating their houses with bunting, or coming together safely as a family in their own gardens, we encourage the city to mark a special date in the city’s and country’s history.”

The City of Culture Trust Team will also be joining the celebrations on the day.
