Dill Sounding Off:

The Coventry Music Museum continues its series of Sounding Off events, that showcases and ultimately creates a legacy for local musicians old and new.

The museum takes this role very seriously, and these Big Lottery funded events are unique in the way the museum archives these wonderful glimpses into the mechanics of local music.

This Saturday, April 15, at 12 noon, sees Dill (Stephen Davies), the enigmatic frontman of the 80’s bands Gods Toys and ‘I’, in the Sounding Off seat, as I ask the questions that take him through his musical history.

This is going to be fascinating, as we find out what it’s like to be on the cusp of chart success and what it’s like supporting Adam and The Ants.

On sale on the day will be copies of Dill’s album with ‘I’ and his brand new CD ‘Daffod’i’ll: Artificial Intelli-gent 1’ featuring a bunch of new songs, like ‘America’, ‘Anyway You’ll Find Love’, ‘Away Old Son’, ‘Stranger Jah’ and ‘Without A Word’.

Joe O’Donnell:

Meet Joe O’Donnell in the street and you would probably never guess what he does for a living.

See him on stage with the electric violin in his hand, and it all becomes very clear, for Joe is a mega musician, with his Celtic World Music band Shkayla.

His live work will astound time after time. So no surprise that he has worked with many bands including East of Eden, Thin Lizzie, The Woods Band and Headstone.

In 1977 his first album ‘Gaodhal’s Vision’ was released to critical acclaim and commercial success. It featured top musicians of the day including guitar superstar Rory Gallagher, yes really!

‘Gaodhal’s Vision’ tells the story of the Milesian people leaving Egypt and setting out for the island, foretold to them by Moses. A trail for the album featuring an exciting violin guitar exchange between Joe and Rory was recorded entitled ‘Storytellers’, but never released, until now. Coventry Music Museum to launch its own record label:

The Music Museum is soon to launch its own record label, CMM RECORDS, with the glorious strapline “More wax for your ears”.

Masterminded by Attrition’s Martin Bowes, we are looking for acts, old and new from Coventry and Warwickshire to appear on the first download release, ‘Alternative Sounds’.

The album will be a fundraiser for the museum, Martin is looking for non-copyright songs, demos and live recordings, any genre. send them to [email protected] …people can use wetransfer.com or dropbox or similar to send me songs… best quality you have!

The Kitchen Cabinet come to Coventry:

The popular Saturday morning Radio 4 food panel show, The Kitchen Cabinet, came to Coventry this week. I was honoured to be asked to take part. As they were in Coventry, they wanted a food-related item that included Coventry’s own 2-Tone music.

I took in a floor tile we removed from the old Parson’s Nose chip shop, and took it along. Presenter (and food critic) Jay Rayner asked me about the item, and played The Specials track ‘Friday Night, Saturday Morning’, a song that immortalised the long gone chip shop, and I also took that famous picture of The Specials standing out front of the shop. The 2-Tone Cafe also featured. You can hear it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08lfbgj#play
