Petition to save 26 trees in Coventry

Holly Clement 8th Sep, 2024   0

OVER 800 people have demanded for Coventry City Council to save the 26 tress which line Clifford Bridge Road.

Between Mill Lane and the roundabout leading to the B4082 are planned to be cut down.

The petition states that some of the trees are over 150 years old and there is a mixture of species each with their own eco system housing various wildlife.

Oak trees on the road have preservation orders and according to the petition the council told residents that some trees were diseased.

The trees are being cut down to make way for a two lane cycleway – the petiton is calling for a re-design or a less destructive route to be found.

Visit the Council’s e-petition page to sign the petition which is running until October 20.

So far 855 people have signed.

A Council spokesperson said: “If these plans are approved at the City Services Cabinet Meeting at the end of October, we would remove 26 trees as part of the work.

“It’s important to note however that they would be replaced by 32 new trees as well as a range of low growing plants.

“Those trees would be planted with a special root protection system which would help them to thrive.

“This section of the cycleway is the final step in joining up the city centre, Binley and the University Hospital.

“When complete that cycleway will play a key role in promoting sustainable travel in our city.”
