Plans to develop eco-friendly routes in South Coventry

PLANS for a £19million investment in new cycling, walking and bus routes in South Coventry are being drawn up.

Over £500,000 of funding has been awarded for design and development works on the project.

It is hoped the cash will support the development of sustainable transport links to the south of the city including the Battery Industrialisation Centre and the proposed Gigafactory site.

The work will also provide green transport links to new housing developments at Whitley Pumping Station and Allard Way.

The scheme will develop a segregated cycle route from Toll Bar End to Coventry City Centre.

It will also create remodelled key road junctions to improve bus journey times and provide safer crossings for people and cyclists.

And there will be new walking and cycling routes at the Whitley Asda roundabout.

Construction is expected to start later this year and be completed by 2026.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is working with the city council to deliver the improvements.

The city region sustainable transport settlement awarded TfWM £17million of the funding last year, with the remaining cash coming from contributions from developers.

The city council’s cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, Coun Jim O’Boyle, said: “The investment in dedicated, segregated cycle routes is a key priority for Coventry.

“They are good for linking people to jobs in the most sustainable way possible, brilliant for public health and of course for the environment.

“This new route will complement the cycle routes already being built in other parts of the city, and will help people living in Whitley and Willenhall areas of the city to access jobs, shops and schools by bike and on foot.”
