Police investigate ride out in Coventry following Luke Cleary funeral

Coventry Editorial 16th Sep, 2022   0

COVENTRY Police are investigating suspected offences committed during yesterday’s ride out in the city following the funeral of Luke Cleary.

A large number of bike riders attended the funeral, with police previously urging people to pay their respects peacefully.

Luke died following a collision in Coventry last month.

Hundreds of bikes drove around the city after the funeral, including on busy roads and across parkland and footpaths.

This continued for over an hour causing frustration to local residents, motorists and businesses.

Three people were arrested yesterday, with a number of suspected stolen bikes also seized.

A 22-year-old man from Longford was arrested for conspiracy to commit violent disorder and possession with intent to supply.

He has been bailed with strict conditions.

A 21-year-old man from Birmingham was also arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop and going equipped.

A 20-year-old man from Edgwick was arrested for shining a laser beam towards the police helicopter.

Both men remain in custody.

The investigation will continue in the coming weeks, with evidence being reviewed from drone and National Police Air Service helicopter footage and body-worn video.

Coventry Police chief superintendent Pete Henrick said: “The policing operation for yesterday’s events was extensive and we were able to deploy local officers, teams from force support, traffic, drones as well as the National Police Air Service.

“Our focus now shifts to a thorough investigation which has gathered evidence from our various resources to identify those involved in criminality.

“Over the next few weeks, those involved risk being arrested, charged with criminal offences and could potentially be jailed.

Police have thanked local people for their support in the investigation.
