AN investigation has been launched into disorder in Coventry yesterday after fireworks were thrown at police officers as large crowds took part in a ride-out to the area following Luke Cleary’s tragic death.
West Midlands Police said pockets of disorder took place which resulted in its officers being injured as they tried to safeguard the public.
The force had earlier respectfully asked people not to take part in the ride-out and Coventry officers were assisted by the traffic unit and a police helicopter as they tried to restore order.
Evidence – captured of those involved – is currently being reviewed.
Luke Cleary died following a collision on Longford Road last Wednesday.
Coventry Police Supt Ronan Tyrer said: “While we fully understand the strength of feeling around Luke Cleary’s untimely and tragic death, there is no justification for this type of behaviour.
“Police officers being attacked is unacceptable whatever the circumstances.
“Our staff work tirelessly to protect the public and help those in their time of need.”
A thorough review of CCTV and bodycam footage is currently underway, with a team working around the clock to identify those involved.
Supt Tyrer added that ‘necessary action’ would be taken against those who committed a crime.
Officers will be in the area reassuring residents and businesses affected.
