Police patrols to enforce pubs and venues coronavirus shutdown orders everywhere in West Midlands

Les Reid 22nd Mar, 2020

POLICE patrols are to crack down on any venues and businesses defying shutdown orders.

West Midlands Police says its officers will enforce the government’s closure orders for pubs, restaurants and more – if their extra advice is not heeded.

The force said: “Our officers will be out and about across the region to offer advice and reminders of the Government measures to keep you safe from Covid-19.

“A number of businesses and venues – which includes all pubs, bars and restaurants – were instructed to close from Friday night to delay the spread of coronavirus.

“As part of our commitment to keeping people safe, we’ll have bobbies on patrol throughout our towns and cities to maintain businesses follow the guidelines each day.

“We’ve already seen a hugely positive reaction to the measures from understanding licensed premises – which appreciate the nationwide effort to protect people from the infection.

“But any business which is reluctant to close as requested will see staff advised about their responsibilities and the need to maintain the united front to fight off the virus. There are police powers for those who refuse to accept the advice which can be enforced if necessary.”

Chief Superintendent Lee Wharmby said: “These are unprecedented times and we’re all having to make social adjustments at the moment.

“But these Government measures have been brought in the for a reason – to save lives and keep people safe.

“As a police force we’re always at the forefront of co-ordinating a response to major incidents and it’s important we do all we can to make sure the advice is followed.

“We’ll have officers on patrol across all of our communities, not just in cities and town centres, to urge businesses to also do their bit and abide by what they’ve been asked.”
