POLICE officers who have fallen in the line of duty have been remembered.
Chief Constable Sir David Thompson and a guard of honour represented West Midlands Police at National Police Memorial Day, September 25, held this year in Belfast, to commemorate those who have died.
The day is marked every year with a national event and in 2021 a permanent memorial called Courage and Sacrifice was unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
Since the introduction of the Bow Street Runners in 1749, the first recognised police service, almost 5,000 police officers and staff have died whilst policing our communities, over 1,500 through acts of violence.
West Midlands Police have a dedicated digital roll of honour and museum that celebrates the 200-year policing history in Steelhouse Lane.
The museum, a converted Victorian police custody block located in the heart of Birmingham’s city centre is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday.
