Powerful climate activism showcase coming to Coventry showrooms

Coventry Editorial 22nd Aug, 2023   0

COVENTRY’S LTB showrooms will be holding a free screening of a powerful rap and spoken word performance of ‘Can I Live?’ this Sunday.

The show will get under way at the showrooms from 6pm followed by a post-screening discussion at 7pm.

Can I Live? is a rap and spoken word performance about the climate crisis through the lens of a young black British artist and activist.

It is inspired by the experiences of Fehinti Balogun’s journey to environmental activism featuring some of his own family.

The piece also raises questions about the lack of representation at the heart of the British climate movement.

It acts as a call to arms to anyone who has felt excluded from activism or is curious about how to get involved.

The film has been produced by world-renowned theatre company Complicite.

Fehinti and director Daniel Bailey will both be attending the event.

Fehinti said: “I want to explain what the climate emergency means to us practically – right now – from the perspective of a young black man living in London.

“For a long time, I didn’t hear anyone talk about the climate crisis in a way that made sense to me and my experiences as a black person, and I think that is what excludes so many of us from the conversation.

“Yet, for many people, the climate crisis is already a deadly situation.”
