Pupils at Coventry's historic King Henry VIII School raise the roof at their annual Christmas concerts

PUPILS from the city’s King Henry VIII Prep school enjoyed an atmospheric Christmas service at Coventry Cathedral; while the Senior school held their Christmas carol concert in the newly refurbished Burgess School Hall.

This year the traditional Christmas concert for older students at this historic coeducational independent day school in Coventry took place on Tuesday, December 17 at 7pm.

It featured carols, jazz and modern Christmas tunes performed by two ensembles with past students, hand bells, a barbershop, junior and senior choirs, the senior orchestra and a clarinet quartet.

A school spokeswoman said: “It was lovely to see so many supportive parents enthusiastically singing along, raising the roof of the newly refurbished Burgess Hall, all washed down with a mince pie and mulled wine.”

Younger children in the Prep school had their afternoon service and carol concert on Monday, December 16 in the picturesque surroundings of the city’s Cathedral.

“Seemingly unfazed by the size of their surroundings, each and every child gave a perfect performance in front of a packed audience, ” said a spokeswoman for the school.

“Headteacher, Caroline Soan was so proud to be able to showcase the school’s talent before many parents, families and governors.”

Famous alumni of the school include poet Philip Larkin, founder member of The Specials, Jerry Dammers and Rachel Millward, the founder of Birds Eye View, a collective for women film-makers.
