Region steps up to help the animals

Coventry Editorial 1st Jul, 2023   0

A SURVEY by the RSPCA has revealed 80 per cent of people in the West Midlands have taken action to help animals.

The charity has published its Animal Kindness Index – a new league table for the nations and the regions in the UK which shows how different areas compare when it comes to animal compassion.

The 2023 groundbreaking survey from the RSPCA, Scottish SPCA and Northern Ireland USPCA looked at a variety of actions – simple steps people could take in their own lives to help promote and encourage animal kindness.

They include feeding the birds, reducing the purchase or usage of single use plastic, donating to or buying products from animal charities, creating a wildlife habitat (for example in a garden), reducing or stopping eating meat, buying products with a higher welfare standard and sharing a missing pet post on social media.

Other actions were taking part in a campaign to improve animal welfare, reducing or stopping eating dairy and animal products (other than meat), a litter pick, adopting an animal from a charity, lobbying government officials to implement more animal welfare protective measures and volunteering for an animal shelter or an animal charity.

The West Midlands was ranked sixth best in the UK with the South West of England top on 86 per cent and the North West of England in second with 85 per cent.

The East Midlands were third on 83 per cent and the East of England and South East of England joint fourth on 82 per cent.

The RSPCA wants to re-energise the nation’s love and activism for animals and has launched a new ‘Kindness Quiz’ to help people understand what more they could do to create a country, and world, that is kinder to animals of all shapes and sizes.
