ARTISTS across the West Midlands are being given the chance to have their work displayed at a Coventry gallery – and could also land themselves a cash prize.

The Coventry Open is a biannual exhibition that is in its tenth year of showcasing a host of works from painting and drawing to sculpture and textiles as well as film and photography.

The works have to be created by artists in the region at any stage in their career, and the best pieces will be displayed at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, while one overall winner will claim £1,000 in prize money.

Artists are urged to submit their creations to the Herbert on Saturday, November 24.

The works will then be assessed by a judging panel including creative director for Coventry City of Culture Trust Chenine Bhathena, Coventry-raised artist Stewart Francis Easton and Marlene Smith, an associate artist at Modern Art Oxford.

Ms Bhathena said: “I’m pleased to get this chance to see artworks by our brilliant locally based artists, especially those who often get overlooked.

“My job for the City of Culture Trust is to ‘explore the role of culture in a modern and diverse Britain’ – to capture Coventry from many different perspectives.

“This is a great opportunity for all artists whatever their form, and from all of our international communities, to submit their work.

“Being UK City of Culture in 2021 is a chance to throw a spotlight on, and provide platforms for, our own local talent and the multitude of creative voices.

“We want to develop a legacy of a thriving, creative, youthful and edgy cultural scene in the city.”

Cultural and creative director from the Herbert Francis Ranford said: “It’s incredible that our Coventry Open competition is now in its tenth year of helping to promote and exhibit art from impressive artists in the region.

“With UK City of Culture fast approaching, we’re excited to be able to engage with artists from the local community to provide them with a platform to share their work.

“Chenine was an obvious choice for the judging panel as the Creative Director for City of Culture and we also wanted a successful Coventry artist to be involved in the selection process so we approached Stewart Francis Easton and Marlene Smith who is an expert on art and curation.

“We look forward to exhibiting the pieces selected by our judges and to announcing the overall winner on Friday, December 7.”
