RETIRED West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Peter Martin will be taking on a Camino pilgrimage walk to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.

This will be Peter’s sixth pilgrimage walk and, over the years, he has raised more than £20,000 for Bowel Cancer, Zoe’s Place and The Alzheimer’s Society.

He flew to Biarritz in France on Tuesday before starting his 520-mile, six-week coastal journey the next day. It will finish in Finisterre in Spain, on July 1.

Peter will be giving updates on his journey throughout his walk through his Facebook page, with highlights including spending his 77th birthday in Santiago on June 25.

So far Peter, who served most of his time in the police working in Coventry, has raised just under £1,500 through his JustGiving page.

He walked up the Malvern Hills 33 times to prepare for the walk.

Peter said: “I chose to support the Alzheimer’s Society as many family members and friends have had this life-changing disease in recent years.

“I feel ready for the rigours of the Camino del Norte although I’m aware it won’t be easy. Hopefully people can say a little prayer for me that all goes okay.”
