REVEALED- Details of next week's Coventry Remembrance Sunday service

Coventry Editorial 2nd Nov, 2023   0

DETAILS of this year’s Coventry Remembrance Day Service and Parade have been revealed.

The service will take place at the War Memorial Park next Sunday, November 12 and will honour and pay respect to those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and other conflicts throughout the globe.

The parade will begin at Spencer Park and make its way to the War Memorial Park through the ceremonial gates, to the Cenotaph.

The service, led by The Venerable Barry Dugmore, Archdeacon of the Diocese of Coventry, will take place at 10.45am and people have been urged to assemble at The Cenotaph from 10.30am.

The event features a parade, hymns, readings, a two-minute silence and prayers, followed by the laying of wreaths by representatives of groups including the Armed Forces, emergency services and civic representatives.

The Exhortation, famous words associated with Remembrance events, and the reading of Kohima, will both be recited by ex-serviceman Jim Ramsey.

There will also be a reading delivered by Pastor Eniiwaju Etomi, the Senior Pastor at Holy Ghost Zone Parish in Hillfields, and prayers will be led by the Roman Catholic Dean of Coventry, The Very Rev Canon Father Thomas Farrell.

The annual Communal Grave Service at London Road Cemetery, which remembers the civilians and volunteers who died during the Coventry Blitz in 1940, takes place at 3pm on the same day.

The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Coun Jaswant Singh Birdi, who will take the salute said: “This service is always very important to the city and acts as a timely reminder for everyone as to why we continue to promote peace and reconciliation around the world.

“As the number of people attending each year illustrates, we know how much the service in the War Memorial Park means to our residents and I’m sure this year’s’ service will be as well-attended as ever and we come together to mark the day.”
