A MAN hit by a reversing white Transit-style van late at night in Coventry is in a coma after being deliberately run over, police say.

They are appealing for witnesses and information to the incident in Holbrook Lane at 11.40pm last Thursday (August 3).

The victim, a man in his 20’s, remains in an induced coma in hospital, police said on Tuesday.

His condition is critical and his parents had flown to the UK from abroad to maintain a vigil at his bedside.

Detective Inspector Stuart Bell from West Midlands Police said: “We are appealing for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

“This was a brutal and deliberate act of violence towards the victim, who was hit by the reversing van at high speed.

“We are urging anyone who may information on the white transit van or its driver to please get in touch.

“The man was found with serious injuries near to the Unicorn working men’s club in Holbrooks Lane at around 11.40pm on 3rd August.

“I’d like to encourage anyone living or visiting the area at the time to cast their minds back and consider if they did see anything that may help us with this investigation.

“We have spoken to a number of witnesses already but would ask anyone who has not yet spoken to us to get in touch.”

Witnesses are urged to contact police on 02476 539420 quoting log 2873 3/8 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

West Midlands Ambulance Service had received several 999 calls to reports of a vehicle which had reversed, colliding with a pedestrian.

An ambulance, a paramedic officer and a critical care car from The Ambulance Service attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said last week: “Ambulance staff arrived to find a pedestrian, a man, who had sustained a potentially serious head injury following a collision with a car.

“Ambulance staff and the doctor on board the critical care care quickly worked to stabilise his condition by administering advanced trauma care at the scene.

“The man was then taken by land ambulance on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further treatment.”
