Save Coventry Speedway Urging People to Support their alternative planning application

Coventry Editorial 21st Apr, 2022   0

THE Save Coventry Speedway Campaign Group is urging people to support its alternative planning proposal for the regeneration of Brandon Stadium before Rugby Borough Council’s consultation period runs out on May 6.

The plan for the 94-year-old racing stadium is now live after it was submitted to the council earlier this year.

Although the site is not owned by the campaign group, members said the planning application was being put forward to demonstrate a viable alternative to the current owner’s plans and to show the strength of public feeling for keeping the stadium.

The application includes plans to convert the stadium’s Hangar No1 into a museum, which will celebrate the venue’s history and heritage of speedway and stock car racing.

The regeneration would also see the under-stand bar converted into a gym complete with treatment rooms and a climbing wall, which would be open to the local community.

The Campaign Group’s plans would see the old dog kennels replaced by a new bar and catering outlet.

The group first made its intentions public last summer, before revising its plans after receiving feedback from local residents through its own consultation process.

Brandon Estates submitted planning application proposes bulldozing the Coventry Speedway to make way for 124 detached houses and access to the site via Rugby Road.

The plans also include open space, a sports pitch, pavilion and car park.

The campaign group are hoping people will send in emails or letters of support to help back the application.

Those wishing to write in have been advised by the group to not directly compare the proposal to Brandon Estates’ submission but judge it on its own merits.

A spokesperson for Save Coventry Speedway said: “We believe our proposals represent the most sustainable use of the site.

“We aim to clearly demonstrate that a viable alternative exists to the policy favoured by the current owners.”

People should email [email protected] to have their say on the proposal.
