SAVE OUR BEES: MP candidates respond to our calls for support to help 'Save Our Bees'

SAVE OUR BEES: AHEAD of the general election, the Coventry Observer has called on all parliamentary candidates in Rugby and Coventry to show their support to our Save Our Bees campaign.

This includes candidates in Rugby Borough, Coventry South, Coventry North East, and Coventry North West.

We informed all candidates about the situation facing the Coventry Bees while asking for their support.

The email sent out can be read below:

‘I am writing to yourself with regards to a campaign our paper is running to ‘Save Our Bees’. As you may – or may not – be aware, earlier this year the Coventry Bees speedway team were tragically axed from the SGB Premiership.

The club has history in Coventry dating back to the 1920s. An ongoing off-track dispute between several parties – including stadium owners Brandon Estates Ltd & Coventry Racing Club – has left the Bees homeless. Talks need to take place to ensure the club can find a short and long-term solution – be it at their traditional Brandon home or elsewhere for a bright long-term future.

As a parliamentary candidate, I am asking if you would you wish to support our campaign should you be elected? So far, the Coventry Observer has received responses from four candidates.

These include independent Ciaran Norris, Jerry Roodhouse of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Mayer from the Conservative Party, Jim Cunningham from Labour, and Claire Edwards of Labour.

Mr Norris – who is standing for Coventry North West – replied to our emailing stating: “Yes – one hundred per cent yes – I’m fully behind the campaign. I’ve already had a few people approach me about it. More than happy to meet with local Bees fans to discuss.”

Coventry South candidate Jim Cunningham expressed his ongoing support towards our Save Our Bees campaign after previously backing calls to get the Bees back on track.

Rugby candidate Jerry Roodhouse replied to support the campaign and hopes more can be done to help the Bees find a new site.

Coventry North East candidate Tim Mayer also supported the campaign and said: “I used to help out at Monmore Green and support the Wolves so will happily sign. I used to clean Sam Ermolenko and Peter Karlsson’s bike back in the day.”

Claire Edwards declared she is happy to support the campaign to Save Coventry Speedway where possible.

Conservative candidate for Coventry North West Resham Kotecha has also pledged to help fight Bees’ survival should she be elected.

She said: “I’d be delighted to support the campaign and, if elected, to try and get parties together to find a long term solution for the Bees.”

Our campaign has also received the support previously from Colleen Fletcher, Marcus Jones and Mark Pawsey.

Craig Tracey, Jeremy Wright, and Chris White have also responded – all of whom said they’d consider a response should the contact live within their constituency.

We await replies from other candidates and will update when received.
