Severn Trent donates £24k to boost Coventry's network of food hubs during pandemic

Coventry Editorial 6th May, 2020   0

SEVERN Trent has donated cash to help support the network of food hubs set up across the Coventry which are offering vital help to residents during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Coventry City Council’s Community Resilience team got in touch with Severn Trent to see if they could offer some support to local charities and churches who are providing invaluable services, from increasing foodbank provision, feeding the homeless, to providing a food parcel home delivery service.

The groups are also taking referrals from partner organisations who identify vulnerable people requesting help and support.

After information was shared on these measures being put into place Severn Trent made the decision to make a donation.

Severn Trent gave a total of £24,000 across the 12 organisations helping people in their community in response to the pandemic.

Daisy Powell, Community Fund Manager at Severn Trent, said: “We’re really amazed to hear of the fantastic work that’s going on at the community food hubs around Coventry at this crucial time, and it’s great that we can offer our thanks and support to our communities through our donation.”

10 hubs have been set up across Coventry and these Hubs are staffed by a dedicated team of local volunteers who have all selflessly come forward to help those who are more vulnerable and need some extra support at this time.

These build upon the many other schemes that have been set up in neighbourhoods in Coventry to assist people who are finding it more difficult to get access to food and other deliveries because of self-isolation guidance.

Organisations that benefited from the donations are The Hope Centre, Feeding Coventry, Moat House Community Trust, Haggard Community Centre, St Andrews Church, Laurence Saunders Rd Baptist Church, St Francis of Assisi, Stoke Aldermoor Community Association, Kings Church, Langar Aid, St Laurence’s Church and Canley Community Centre.

The Community Resilience Team are continuing to support charities by writing funding applications, connecting offers of help to organisations that need support.

The Hubs scheme is being delivered in partnership with a number of voluntary sector organisation including Trussell Trust and Coventry Foodbank. Thanks also to Moat House, Henley Green Community Centre, Feeding Coventry and Hope Coventry and many other partners for supporting the development of the model and already delivering emergency food services across the city.

Cllr Tariq Khan, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at the Council, added: “Well done Severn Trent. This is another example of great partnership working – highlighting the enormous effort that the city is making to improve life for vulnerable people at this difficult time.”

Residents who do not have any existing support from neighbours, family or friends can access the service, by contacting Coventry City Council on 08085 834 333 or visiting Emergency Food Network.

Any local groups who are currently supporting people around this Covid-19 crisis and want to offer additional support should e-mail: [email protected] or any business who wishes to make a financial donation to the hundreds of community ventures taking part across the city can also contact at the above email address.
