Shortwood Court hold art showcase and party to celebrate the sixties

Ryan Smith 22nd Jun, 2022

RESIDENTS at Shortwood Court hosted their very own City of Culture celebration to reminisce and enjoy a private art showcase that celebrated sixties food, music and culture.

The independent living scheme played host to FEAST where they delved into how food connects people through storytelling.

The residents and their families were given an exhibition featuring photography and poetry in the living area followed by a 1960’s themed party.

They had been planning the party since February and had nine of the residents aged between 58 and 92 trained to create a buffet.

Coventry’s poet laureate Emilie Lauren Jones and animator Louisa Freitas were told about 60’s stories by residents, and the pair turned what they had learned into an animated spoken word poetry piece that was on display at the party.

The scheme was supported by Cook Together Eat Together, the City of Culture Trust, and housing provider Orbit and aimed to tackle loneliness among vulnerable people.

Resident Blanche Rawbone said: “I am quite new to Shortwood Court and getting together to cook each week was a great way to interact with others on the scheme and to make new friends.

“The whole evening was a great success and I enjoyed it very much, especially the animations.”

Mandy Collett, Orbits independent living scheme officer added: “This was a fantastic event and a culmination of lots of hard work for all involved, including residents.

“The restrictions of the past couple of years due to Covid-19 have been very challenging so it was so lovely to see residents, family and friends connecting through the stories, memories and food that we shared.”
