A POPULAR event aimed at encouraging older people to socialise through reminiscence will host a special one off event with bona fide Coventry City legend ‘Oggy’.

Sporting Memories presents an Evening with Steve Ogrizovic where the former FA Cup winning Sky Blues goalkeeper . The special event will be at the special guest at the Alan Higgs Centre at 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday, April 26).

The get-togethers are usually held on the final Friday afternoon of the month – Sporting Memories is an opportunity for the older generation to socialise and meet up with friends, reminiscing about their lives in Coventry via the lens of sport.

Run by CV Life’s Coventry Moves project, the events are compered by hometown athletics legend Dave Moorcroft.

The events are informal, with Dave asking and fielding questions from guests and attendees – who usually sit around scattered tables sipping tea and coffee.

Though on this occasion a slap up meal is on offer for people attending, the informal atmosphere will be retained, with Oggy taking questions in a conversational manner.

Being record appearance holder for Coventry, an FA Cup winner, and, until Ben Wilson’s equaliser against Blackburn Rovers recently, the last goalie to score for the Sky Blues, Oggy is certain to be full of anecdotes and memories which will make all sport fans smile.

Jade Woodward, community coordinator for CV Life, said: “Sporting Memories is a really popular event which really helps get the older generation out and about, socialising, chatting and generally having fun through reminiscing about sport.

“We’ve had some fantastic guests in recent months, including former Coventry defender Dave Busst, BBC CWR reporter Clive Eakin and legendary BBC swimming commentator Hamilton Bland.

“We’ve been trying to get Steve Ogrizovic involved for a while but due to his commitments elsewhere we struggled to pin him down for our usual daytime slot.

“Thankfully we’ve managed to book him for an evening event, and this allowed us to turn it into more of ‘An Evening With…’ occasion with a meal and some drinks.”

The event takes place from 6pm on Wednesday 26 April at Alan Higgs Centre. Tickets cost £7, with people needing to email: [email protected] to confirm their place.
